Pool and Spa Safety Act and Suction Entrapment Avoidance

The Association of Pool and Spa Professionals is providing complimentary information to assist you in navigating compliance requirements found in the “Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act”.

There are new mandatory federal requirements for suction entrapment avoidance and the voluntary state grant program under the recently enacted “Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act.

Be prepared for the new requirements by learning what you need to do to ensure that all public pools and spas within your jurisdictions comply with this new law


By Dec. 20, 2008, pool and spa safety covers must be compliant with the ASME anti-entrapment cover standard (ASME/ANSI A112.19.8)


By Dec. 20,
public pools and spas must be retrofitted with compliant covers.

By Dec. 20, all public pool and spas (pumps) with a single main drain, other than an unblockable drain, must be equipped with one or more additional anti-entrapment systems/devices, including a safety vacuum release system (SVRS), vent system, gravity drainage system, or automatic pump shutoff system.

The new ANSI/APSP-7 American National Standard for Suction Entrapment Avoidance is consistent with the entrapment guidelines in the new law.

To assist you, we are makng available, FREE access to download the ANSI/APSP Pool and Spa standards, APSP Glossary of Industry Terms, and the APSP Workmanship Guidelines, for members of the International Code Council (ICC) from the ICC website.

After, February 24 2008, ICC members can go
